This Just In...Jon Stewart a Dad!
Jon Stewart swapped his independence for parenthood over the holiday weekend.
The Daily Show host and his wife, graphic designer Tracey Stewart, "joyfully" announced the birth of their son on Saturday in New York, according to a statement released by publicist Matt Labov.
The baby, named Nathan Thomas, is the first child for the couple, who tied the knot in 2000.
No official announcement was made on Stewart's Comedy Central series, but Tuesday night's guest, Ralph Nader, may have let the cat out of the bag with a reference to Junior.
"Well, that's a super-secret, now we have to kill you," quipped Daily Show correspondent Stephen Colbert in response.
The pregnancy was revealed in much the same way when Daily Show guest and longtime Stewart acquaintance Jennifer Beals congratulated him on air--unaware that Stewart's papa-to-be status wasn't public knowledge.
Otherwise, it's been a good year for the 41-year-old funnyman.
In May, Stewart agreed to a four-year contract extension at Comedy Central that will keep him anchoring the mock newscast through 2008.
"A lot of people like to get out when their show's still going well," Stewart said in a statement. "This gives me the opportunity to beat this thing into the ground."
For his efforts, Stewart will reportedly receive a raise upping his current $1.5 million salary, which will buy plenty of Pampers.
Stewart took over the anchor desk in January 1999 from original host Craig Kilborn.
Prior to joining The Daily Show, Stewart emceed the syndicated Jon Stewart Show, which originally aired on MTV, and was a fill-in host for The Late Late Show with Tom Snyder.
Stewart, who hosted the 2002 Grammy Awards, has also tried his hand at acting. Aside from a recurring role as Garry Shandling's scheming successor on HBO's The Larry Sanders Show, Stewart has appeared in such feature flicks as Playing by Heart, Death to Smoochy, Big Daddy and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.
