Billy Crystal Does Broadway
Billy Crystal is getting ready to give his regards to Broadway.
The actor, revered award-show host, Saturday Night Live alum and all around mahvelous guy is taking his shtick to New York's theater district with an autobiographical one-man show dubbed 700 Sundays.
The title is a reference to Crystal's estimation of how many days he was able to spend with his father before the senior Crystal passed away when his son was just 15.
Crystal said his father, Jack, a jazz-concert producer, always worked several jobs at a time and Sunday was the only day he could spare to spend with his family.
"I am thrilled to come home and bring this story of my family to Broadway," Crystal said in a statement. "As an artist, I've never felt as complete as I have developing and performing this show. This is not a history of my career, it is about periods of my life and people in my life that helped make me a man."
The play, penned by its star, features Crystal portraying various people from his childhood, adolescence and adulthood.
It marks Crystal's first long-term return to live performing in 16 years. He originally performed the show as a work-in-progress at the La Jolla Playhouse in California earlier this year.
The polished version begins previews Nov. 12 at the Broadhurst Theater and is officially open Dec. 5.
Tony-winning director Des McAnuff (Big River, The Who's Tommy) helms the project.
It's not the first time the comic has turned to his family for inspiration.
Last year, he signed a book deal with Harper Collins to write a children's story inspired by the birth of his granddaughter. The end result, I Already Know I Love You, was published this spring to glowing reviews, per Amazon.com.
The comedian/kiddie scribe is set to pen another child-friendly work at some point, but no word on when his sophomore effort can be expected.
In February, Crystal served as host of the 76th Academy Awards--his eighth time emceeing the Oscars. He was last seen on the big screen in 2002's Analyze That, the disappointing follow-up to 1999's Analyze This, opposite Robert De Niro and Lisa Kudrow.
