Bob Dylan Sells Panties

The times they are a-changin' for newly minted underwear salesman Bob Dylan.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer appears in Victoria's Secret's latest television spots, which promote the company's Angels collection of bras, panties and the like.

The commercial was shot in Venice, Italy, and it features a musical backdrop of Dylan's 1997 hit "Love Sick" from his Grammy-winning album Time Out of Mind.

Model Adriana Lima costars in the campaign and sports a pair of wings in keeping with the campaign's angelic theme of spike heels and the obligatory skimpy lingerie set.

Dylan, on the other hand, remains--thankfully--clothed in the spots, which premiered during last week's American Idol.

It's the rocker's first foray into the world of merchandising, though "The Times They Are A-Changing" was used in an ad for the Bank of Montreal in 1996.

Victoria's Secret Creative Director Ed Razek told the San Francisco Chronicle that the idea to cast Dylan in the commercials came from the company's top brass, Les Wexner.

"We had done some spots last year with Dylan's music, and they got a great response," Razek said. "So, Les asked, 'Do you think Dylan would do a commercial?' It was a stunningly bold idea. We called his management, they found a two-day hole in his schedule, and off we went to Venice."

Claire Mercuri, vice president of media relations at Columbia Records, said the label was excited about Dylan's latest venture.

"We think this is a great way to reach people with Bob's music," Mercuri told the Chronicle. "We're thrilled that he said, 'Yes' when we asked him to be in the commercial."

In addition to the ads, a nine-song Dylan compilation will be offered in Victoria's Secret stores for $10.

The New York Post was quick to label the rocker its "sellout of the week," while fans flooded chat rooms after the spot aired, some to accuse the rocker of selling out and others to argue that Dylan could use his music as he pleased.

I only wish this were an April Fools' Day hoax," one post began. "Has anyone seen the new Victoria's Secret commercial with Bob Dylan?"

"On first glance, this is wrong on so many levels, but after viewing it I really admire Bob Dylan," the post continued. "I only hope that, when I reach Dylan's age, someone approaches me to ask if I would like to be paid to fly to Venice and do a commercial with several supermodels."

We're thinking that Dylan's reasoning for doing the commercials might have worked along those lines.
