NBC Clips "Charlie's" Wings?
It figures an unauthorized story would come complete with its own behind-the-scenes drama.
NBC has purportedly cut the final scene from Monday night's TV movie Behind the Camera: The Unauthorized Story of Charlie's Angels because Farrah Fawcett's former manager threatened legal action.
Jay Bernstein, who served as a paid consultant on the fluffy flick, claims the network responded after he complained that the scene was hurtful and potentially damaging to his show-biz career.
However, a spokesperson for NBC alleges the movie was running long and therefore trimmed for artistic purposes. "It was cut to keep the focus on the women," said the network's Bob Meyer.
A quick recap for those who missed the drama behind the original "Jiggle TV" show: Charlie's Angels premiered Sept. 22, 1976 and turned its crime-fighting stars, Fawcett (who was Farrah Fawcett-Majors at the time), Kate Jackson and Jaclyn Smith, into overnight sensations.
But Fawcett left the female detective series after only one season--reportedly because then hubby Lee Majors wanted a stay-at-home wife--which sparked trouble among Bernstein, creator Aaron Spelling and ABC.
In the TV movie's final scene, Bernstein was portrayed as a beer-bellied, Hawaiian shirt-wearing hustler accosting women on Hollywood Boulevard searching for the next Farrah.
"I didn't want money, I just wanted to get rid of those 12 seconds," Bernstein told E! Online, saying he came off as a "down-and-out sleazeball."
The new ending features Bernstein (played by Wallace Langham) narrating a where-are-they-now segment and giving a nod to his famous client. "But let me tell you something, there's only been one Farrah."
