FIRST LOOK: The News in Brief, February 18, 2004

BIG-SCREEN SEX! With the series finale airing Sunday, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis in talks with HBO to reprise their roles for a Sex and the City movie, Variety reports. The script is being penned by executive producer, writer and director Michael Patrick King.

LEGAL JUNGLE: Guns N' Roses frontman Axl Rose, who controls the name of the band, considering legal action against Geffen Records to block the March 23 release of a greatest hits collection, featuring 14 of the band's best known tracks.

PARADISE CITY: Meanwhile, Axl and his newly revamped Guns N' Roses are scheduled to play the Rock in Rio-Lisbon festival on May 30, their first live gig since their disastrous 2002 comeback tour was scrapped with 13 dates remaining.

IN HER SKIN Columbia Records releasing an extended version of Jessica Simpson's album, In This Skin, based on the pop singer's surge in popularity. The new version will include bonus tracks and Newlyweds wedding footage.

ENVELOPE, PLEASE: Tom Cruise will be a presenter at the 76th Annual Academy Awards on Feb. 29.

WORKING IT OUT: Marilyn Manson settling a civil lawsuit with a security guard who accused him of sexual assault after the shock rocker allegedly gyrated his crotch against him while wearing only a thong onstage during a gig in Detroit. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

HACK ATTACK: Johnny Depp winning a Pink Lung Award at the ninth annual Hackademy Awards for his smoke-free performance in Pirates of the Caribbean. Diane Keaton earned a Black Lung Award for her cigarette-smoking character in Something's Got to Give. The Hackademys are awarded by a group of Sacramento-area teens in connection with the American Lung Association.

HANG NAIL: Prosecutors and lawyers for Phil Spector spending 90 minutes on Tuesday fighting over a broken thumbnail from the woman he is charged with killing. Prosecutors want the tiny piece of evidence and the defense refuses to give it up. A third hearing on the matter has been scheduled for May.

BUZZED: Kevin Smith signing on to write and direct The Green Hornet for Miramax. Shooting is slated to begin this summer.

SOON TO BE MIA? CSI: Crime Scene Investigation star William Petersen telling the March issue of Playboy that he will exit after fulfilling his contract next season because he's unhappy with CBS and producers for cloning the series.

PRIVACY MATTERS: Naomi Campbell appearing before Britain?s House of Lords to appeal a court ruling that a newspaper had the right to print a picture of her leaving a drug rehab meeting.

FEELS LIKE A HIT: Norah Jones' sophomore album, Feels Like Home, debuting at number one on the Billboard charts and selling more than 1 million copies, making it the biggest first week for an album since July 2001.

STILL IN THE LIMELIGHT: Canadian prog-rock trio Rush announcing a 41-date 30th anniversary tour, kicking off May 26 in Nashville and wrapping up on August 22 in the group's home city of Toronto. The band made the announcement even though guitarist Alex Lifeson is facing felony assault charges in Florida.

KUDOS! Retro rockers The Darkness snagging three awards, including Best British Rock Act, and Justin Timberlake and Dido each scoring two honors at Tuesday night's Brit Music Awards in London.

SEEING TRIPLE: The animated feature The Triplets of Belleville named Best French Film of 2003 at the Lumières Awards in Paris Tuesday. The film is also up for Best Animated Film and Best Original Song at the Oscars.

THE WEDDING PLANNER: Selma Blair starring in her own ABC pilot, DeMarco Affairs, a romantic comedy centering on three sisters who inherit their family's wedding planning business.

BACK TO THE TUBE: Christopher Lloyd, best known for playing Doc Brown in the Back to the Future trilogy, coming aboard CBS' pilot Clubhouse a coming-of-age drama about a New York Yankees batboy.

TEAMING UP: Jeff Goldblum set to co-star with Paul Reiser in NBC's comedy pilot My 11:30, playing a shallow playboy New York financial consultant who, after his high-pressured job leads to a meltdown, starts seeing a no-nonsense therapist.

COPPING A PLEA: An Illinois man accused of making illegal bootlegs from Oscar screeners for such films as The Last Samurai and Master and Commander and posting them on the Web has pleaded innocent to federal charges.

COLD CUTS: Chinese censors deciding to nix the love scenes from Cold Mountain before the film's release there in April as they were "not in accord with national conditions."

BAD BOY: P. Diddy protégé Loon and two other men taken into custody on Friday in connection with the stabbing of a security guard outside a Los Angeles nightclub, authorities said Tuesday. The rapper posted $1 million bail and awaits arraignment.

OF MICE AND FROGS: Disney acquiring Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and the rest of the Muppets, as well as the Bear in the Big Blue House franchise from the Jim Henson Company.

PARDON MOI: In response to Canadian officials' outrage, Conan O'Brien issuing a bilingual apology to those he offended with the help of a translator. The apology begins as follows: O'Brien: "People of Quebec, I'm sorry." Translator (in French with subtitles): "People of Quebec, I'm an albino jackass." Viewers can tune into tonight's Late Night for the full act of contrition.

HEY JUDE: Jude Law named the ShoWest 2004 Male Star of the Year; the ShoWest Convention will take place March 22 through March 25 in Las Vegas.

GOLDEN GIRL: Scarlett Johansson chosen as the new face of Calvin Klein. She'll front a new fragrance campaign scheduled to launch this fall.

PUTTING OUT THE FIRE: Johnny Cash's family quashing an ad campaign for hemorrhoid-relief products set to the tune of "Ring of Fire."
