Chrysler Pulls Out of Lingerie Bowl

Chrysler's knickers are in a twist over the upcoming Lingerie Bowl.

The auto manufacturer has yanked its planned sponsorship of the upcoming pay-per-view stunt--a tackle football game between scantily clad underwear models scheduled to take place during halftime of the Super Bowl--in an effort to not offends its clientele.

DaimlerChrysler senior VP George M. Murphy says the company has received criticism from its customers and has decided the game is sexist. So he has decided to no longer back it. "Dodge brand's sponsorship of the Lingerie Bowl has become a distraction," he said in a statement.

Organizers of the event, however, say the contest is still a go. But Lingerie Bowl executive producer Mitch Mortaza says he is disappointed in the news, "especially since we were led to believe they were behind it 110 percent," he griped in a press release.

"Not only did Dodge evaluate the event for four months before committing, but the details and marketing plan...have not changed since its inception," Mortaza said.

Dodge initially decided to sponsor the game in hopes of appealing to its mostly male buyers of cars and trucks. Reps even said at the time that they expected some criticism for their involvement.

The company apparently reconsidered after being inundated with anti-Lingerie Bowl emails organized by conservative critics.

Featuring the tagline "Halftime has never been this sexy," Lingerie Bowl 2004 pits two seven-babe squads, Team Dream and Team Euphoria, respectively captained by model-actresses Nikki Ziering and Angie Everhart and coached by former NFL greats Eric Dickerson and Lawrence Taylor, against each other in a full-contact panty-happy pigskin tilt.

Lingerie Bowl was originally supposed to feature the players in just bras and panties, but organizers bowed to criticism and decided to make the 26 models participating wear football pads on top of their, um, uniforms.

The 20-minute game, to be held February 1 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, will begin as the real Super Bowl goes into halftime and is being offered on pay-per-view for $19.95.

Organizers hope testosterone types will surf over to the Lingerie Bowl instead of suffering through the MTV-produced Janet Jackson-headlined halftime show on CBS' coverage of Super Bowl XXXVIII, taking place at Reliant Stadium in Houston.

Lingerie Bowl producer Horizon Productions says the event is currently in search of a new sponsor but no backer has yet been found.
