Denis Leary on Ice
Denis Leary is ready to get all pucked up.
The trash-talking comedian and lifelong hockey fan has been offered a one-game contract to suit up as one of the Columbus Stars of the United Hockey League.
Leary would be paid $300 for his puck skills--the standard player salary for a one-game contract. A percentage of the game's proceeds would also be donated to the Leary Firefighters Foundation.
The Ref star established the charity four years ago after the deaths of six firefighters in a warehouse fire in his hometown of Worcester, Massachusetts. One of the victims was Leary's cousin.
Earlier this year, Leary's foundation raised more than $500,000 from an exhibition game featuring Boston Bruins legend Bobby Orr and other Bruins stars.
Columbus Stars general manager Dean Schoenwald said that the one-game contract would give Leary the chance to fulfill his dream of playing professional hockey.
Leary is currently at work on Rescue Me, a television series in which he both stars and shares writing credits. The series reportedly deals with a firefighter (Leary) who deals with the fears of his job and the pain of watching his ex-wife date other man.
Leary would be the latest in a long line of jock-minded celebs looking to showcase their skills with the pros. Master P, R. Kelly and Craig Kilborn have all tried to hoop it up in recent years, while Garth Brooks struck out in ill-fated tryout stunt with baseball's San Diego Padres.
