Coldplayer Cleared of Foul Play

Coldplay crooner Chris Martin is in the clear.

Australian police on Friday dismissed charges against the Brit band frontman stemming from an alleged attack on a paparazzo's car over the summer.

Oz's finest decided to toss charges of malicious damage and property damage after consulting with the offending shutterbug, Jon Lister. Martin had previously offered an apology to Lister for vandalizing the photog's car and footed the repair bill.

"Investigations indicated there was a degree of provocation causing the 26-year-old [Martin's] actions," News South Wales police said in a statement. "Further basis for not proceeding was the 26-year-old man is a person of prior good character who admitted his guilt when spoken to police, expressed his contrition and has since paid reparations for the damage."

Martin was rung up on the vandalism charges on July 20. Lister had been tailing Martin and was able to snap several digital photos of the singer as he surfed at Seven Mile beach, near the northern town of New South Wales' Byron Bay.

Martin, who had been traveling with gal-pal Gwyneth Paltrow (she wasn't there for the incident) and was in the area for a local music festival, took offense to the snapshots and demanded Lister erase the offendings pics. When Lister refused, the rocker reportedly grabbed a rock and smashed the windshield of Lister's car, then let the air out of the photog's tires.

The case was officially dismissed by a magistrate on Friday. Martin was not required to be in court.

Instead, he and his mates are logging some studio time, where they're recording a follow-up to 2002's multiplatinum A Rush of Blood to the Head. The new disc isn't expected to be in stores until late 2004.

To tide fans over, the Grammy-winning group last week released a combo CD/DVD concert set, Coldplay Live 2003, which includes performances of the band's hits "Yellow," "Trouble" and "Clocks."

Coldplay can also be heard on Sweet Tracks, a Christmas compilation that also features Sting and Jewel and is due in stores next Tuesday.
