Roy Relocated; Condition Improving
Roy Horn's getting a change of scenery.
The 59-year-old animal-training illusionist of Siegfried and Roy fame was transferred Tuesday to a new medical center in Los Angeles, where he will continue to recover from a near-fatal tiger mauling.
In a statement, partner Siegfried Fischbacher said, "Roy is now making the transition from survival to recovery.
"While we are all aware that the road ahead is long, all of us in the Siegfried & Roy family are encouraged by Roy's remarkable demonstration of will, courage and faith."
Horn has been taken to a rehabilitation center at UCLA Medical Center. Reps for UCLA said, "Roy's condition...is serious, but his vital signs are stable." The hospital did not offer any specifics on the entertainer's long-term prognosis.
The cat-taming magician had been in intensive care at University Medical Center in Las Vegas, Nevada's only top-tier trauma facility following the Oct. 3 attack during a sold-out performance at the Mirage hotel. The attack came on Horn's 59th birthday.
Horn suffered a stroke that left him partially paralyzed on his left side, but he was able to give a thumbs-up sign to loved ones and request his beloved dog be brought in.
While at UMC, Horn underwent surgery to relieve pressure on his brain; during the procedure, a quarter of his skull was removed and stored in his abdomen.
"We are both grateful and awed by the outpouring of love and prayers from Las Vegas and around the globe and know that this support has played a crucial role in Roy's recovery," said Siegfried & Roy manager Bernie Yuman.
Meanwhile Montecore, the white tiger that went after Horn, has been released from quarantine and will remain in his home at the Mirage. Horn reportedly asked that the cat's life be spared.
With his partner facing what's certain to be a long rehabilitation, Siegfried traveled last week to Hamburg to accept a special World Entertainment Award on Roy's behalf at the third annual World Awards. While there, he promised the show would go on for the pair.
"The Siegfried who you see before you here will soon return again as Siegfried and Roy," the German-born illusionist told the audience.
After the accident, Mirage officials permanently shut down Siegfried & Roy, one of Sin City's most enduring and lucrative acts, telling hundreds of employees to look for new jobs.
