Costner Dances with Marriage Again
Kevin Costner's next field of dreams: the wedding chapel.
Nearly a decade after his $80 million split with first wife Cindy, the Oscar-winning filmmaker and actor is finally ready to tie the knot again, having popped the question to longtime girlfriend Christine Baumgartner, the actor's publicist, Michelle Bega, confirmed on Thursday.
A wedding date has not been set.
Costner, 48, hooked up with his 29-year-old bride to be about four years ago. Like Costner, Baumgartner attended California State University, Fullerton, and majored in business, though in different eras.
This will be the first marriage for Baumgartner--whose day job is, yes, as a businesswoman--and the second for Costner. He and Cindy ended their 16-year union after he wrapped production on his all-wet 1994 sci-fi flick Waterworld. They had three children together; he also fathered a child during a brief fling with socialite Bridgette Rooney.
Costner, who owns a pair of Oscars for producing and directing 1990's Best Picture winner Dances with Wolves, turned up this week in the Black Hills of South Dakota, where much of that film was shot. He was on hand to dedicate a sculpture showing Lakota Indians hunting bison.
Costner has also proposed building a $100 million Dunbar resort (after his character John Dunbar) in the region. During the dedication, he said he was having trouble convincing investors in "White America" to help make it a reality, but he remained optimistic if he builds it, people will come.
In addition to his pending nuptials, Costner has something else to look forward to: It was just announced he will be getting a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame next year.
Aside from Dances, Costner is known for his run of hits in the '80s and early '90s--The Untouchables, No Way Out, Bull Durham, Field of Dreams, JFK, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and The Bodyguard.
After a string of major misfires (The Postman, 3,000 Miles to Graceland, Message in a Bottle, Dragonfly), Costner will try to reverse his luck this August with the release of the western Open Range, which he directed and starred in alongside Robert Duvall and Annette Bening.
