Tom Hanks, Phishhead. Not.
Tom Hanks making a cameo at a New Year's Eve concert? Sounds pretty fishy to his reps.
Make that Phish-y.
According to the actor's publicist, the two-time Oscar winner did not show up at Tuesday night's Phish concert at Madison Square Garden as widely reported.
"He was going with his family for a skiing holiday and had no plans to be in New York," publicist Wendy Morris told the Associated Press Friday.
"There is no way he would come to New York for New Year's Eve."
During the show, the Vermont-based band's first following a two-year hiatus, a clip was unspooled of Cast Away, showing Hanks having a heart-to-heart with good pal Wilson the volleyball. Afterward, the Hanks doppelganger, in a dark jacket and ball cap, came up on stage, waved and then exited.
As initially uncovered by Salon.com, the Hanks hoax went unnoticed by several concert reviewers, including those from the New York Times, MTV and the AP, who were completely snookered by the jokesters in the jam band.
As the Times noted, "Mr. Hanks himself made a brief, bizarre appearance onstage." MTV said that Phish managed to get "actor Hanks himself to run onstage and blurt one of the key lyrics." And AP reported, "A band known for its New Year's Eve showmanship didn't disappoint: Tom Hanks made a surprise stage appearance."
According to several fan sites, the culprit was actually the brother of keyboardist Page McConnell.
There's been no official comment on the Hanks hoodwinking by the band, which was preparing to play a show at Virginia's Hampton Coliseum Friday night.
No word on whether our man "Tom" would be attending that show, too.
