Fur Flies at Victoria's Secret Show

The fur was indeed flying at the much anticipated Victoria's Secret annual fall fashion show on Thursday as animal-rights activists infiltrated the land of push-up bras and thongs to protest the pelt-wearing ways of superbabe Gisele B?ndchen.

As the sultry catwalker made her way down the runway in just a beaded bra, her skivies and thigh-highs, activists from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals rushed the stage toting protest signs. Before being yanked off the stage, the four female protesters yelled at the Brazilian import and waved banners reading "Gisele: Fur Scum."

Show organizers quickly dimmed the lights, removed the protesters and had B?ndchen start over amid enthusiastic audience applause.

The model, who has draped fur on herself in magazine spreads worldwide and currently moonlights as the spokesmodel for Blackglama Fur, seems to be taking the PETA protests in stride.

"I am doing my job as a working model," she said in a statement. "Everyone is entitled to their own opinion."

PETA was sticking to its decidedly less diplomatic opinion. "Gisele has blood on her hands and blood money in her pockets," said PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. "She may have long legs, but she's pitifully short on compassion, given the pain and fear that animals suffer for her vanity."

The fashion show, featuring live music, acrobats and, of course, its trademark angel wing-sporting models is slated for broadcast on CBS on November 20. Network reps say the PETA protest will be snipped out of the CBS special.

Instead of the "blood money" stuff, CBS will focus on the undies. After all, the network is billing its broadcast as "The Sexiest Night of Television." Titled Christmas Dreams & Fantasies 2002, the show is hosted by Sugar Ray's Mark McGrath and longtime panty-hawker Heidi Klum and features musical performances by Destiny's Child and Marc Anthony.

Grace Nichols, president and CEO of Victoria's Secret Stores, gamely told the Associated Press that the show is a springboard for all the new products. "We really worked much harder to develop a connection with hot-off-the-runway products."

But TV viewers, much like the star-studded celebrity crowd who attended the show, are more likely in it for a gander at the scantily clad T&A of B?ndchen, Klum, Tyra Banks and a bevy of other buxom beauties.

Initially a Web-only offering designed to get underwear buyers online, the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show has attracted record traffic and jammed Internet lines everywhere since its inception. Last year, ABC picked it up and broadcast it as a record-breaking, hour-long special that attracted an estimated 12 million oglers.

CBS says this year will be even better and will include model profiles and a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the show. PETA, not included.
