Sanz Sweeps Latin Grammys--Again
Alejandro Sanz shook things up at the third annual Latin Grammy Awards. And we're not just talking about his booty.
The Spanish singer was the big winner at Wednesday night's ceremonies, beating odds-on favorite Carlos Vives to snag all three top awards--Best Song and Record for "Y Solo Se Me Ocurre Amarte" and Album of the Year for his MTV Unplugged.
The victory marks the second straight Latin Grammys sweep for Sanz, whose four wins last year ended up being a footnote when the Latin Recording Academy decided to scrap its planned prime-time telecast of the ceremony in the wake of the September 11 attacks.
"To win two years in a row, it's too much," said the 33-year-old Sanz.
"I'm a little embarrassed from taking this award from Celia Cruz," he added, referring to his Best Album competition.
But Cruz, the 77-year-old Cuban-American salsa-singing diva, didn't go home empty-handed. She took the first trophy handed out Wednesday evening, Best Salsa Album for La Negra Tiene Tumbao. Cruz received a standing ovation--even as her body-hugging getup made negotiating the aisles at Hollywood's Kodak Theater a bit difficult. (She needed an assist from 'N Syncer Justin Timberlake to make it up on the stage.)
"Excuse my English because it's not very good-looking. What I want to say is thank you to all of you," she said, before switching to Spanish for a rousing acceptance speech. (The ceremony, televised on CBS, alternated between English and Spanish.)
At least Cruz made it, though. Twenty-two of her Cuban compatriots, including Chucho Vald?s who won for Pop Instrumental Album, weren't given visas because the island nation is on the U.S. government's post-9-11 terrorism watch list and they didn't submit the extra paperwork required in time.
A small group of picketers outside the Kodak protested the slight, toting signs that read "Where Are the Cuban Artists?" and "Let the Cubans Come." Cuban politics have dogged the Latin Grammys from the outset, forcing organizer to relocate the show from Miami to L.A.
Back inside, Colombian singer Carlos Vives, who went into the night with a leading six nominations, walked away with two awards, Best Contemporary Tropical Album (D?jame Entrar) and Tropical Song (for the title track).
Mexico's Ramon Ayala y Sus Bravos del Norte also picked up two awards, winning both categories in which they were nominated, Best Norte?o Album for El N?mero Cien and Best Regional Mexican Song for "Del Otro Lado del Porton." Sentimental favorite Vicente Fern?ndez, aka Mexico's King of Ranchera, received his first Grammy Wednesday, for--appropriately enough--Best Ranchera Album for M?s con el N?mero Uno. He was also named Person of the Year in a preshow ceremony.
The evening kicked off with Marc Anthony giving a scorching performance of "Celos" and was followed by a duet featuring pop singer Nelly Furtado and Colombian singer Juanes. Turning up the heat (literally) was Mexican pop star Thal?a, who sashayed across a pyrotechnic-filled stage in a low-cut dress while performing "No Me Ense?aste."
Other performers included Shakira, who picked up Best Video for her hit "Suerte," as well as three-time Latin Grammy-winning rock legend Carlos Santana, who took the stage with rap-metal group P.O.D. to perform "America," a song off his upcoming album, Shaman.
To emphasize the show's all-inclusive nature, cohosts Jimmy Sits and Gloria Estefan were joined by non-Latin presenters like Timberlake and Jennifer Love Hewitt.
