Cokie Roberts Battling Breast Cancer

This week has presented a new battle for veteran ABC Newswoman Cokie Roberts.

The 58-year-old anchor of This Week has confirmed to the Washington Post that she's battling breast cancer. Her doctor found a suspicious lump in June, and a mammogram later revealed a small tumor in her left breast. Roberts recently underwent a successful lumpectomy at Sibley Hospital in Washington, D.C.

For Roberts, the diagnosis comes after she announced plans to step back from her primary role--that of host of ABC's Sunday-morning political program, This Week. In June, ABC announced that former Bill Clinton adviser George Stephanopoulos is taking over as host of the show in September, replacing Roberts and coanchor Sam Donaldson, who have anchored since 1996.

But Roberts, a mother of two and grandmother of three, doesn't expect her cancer fight to keep her from continuing her work for ABC News. Treatments are set to begin this week and they won't "cause any major interference with my work," which will include working during the upcoming elections, she told the Post. She added that she expects to have a clean bill of health after six months of chemotherapy.

"The doctors tell me there are different effects for different people, and that I am likely to feel crummy for a day or so after every treatment," Roberts said. "This is pretty standard."

As a longtime supporter of breast cancer-related causes, Roberts told the Post she's been "very religious" about annual mammograms, "and I was furious during the period when people were being told that under age 50, they did not need to have mammograms."

Meantime, Roberts said she's looking forward to weekend family time after six years of Sunday mornings spent talking politics.

"I want my weekends, and now I have my weekends," she said. "My family has been wonderful and very supportive and loving. They're a great group of people. When we spend time together, what we mainly do is laugh."
