Booze, Brawls Barely Bump "Big Bro"
For all the controversy generated this week from Big Brother 2, CBS scored only a lukewarm 9.2 million viewers Thursday night, as 26-year-old New Jersey bartender Justin Sebik held a carving knife to the throat of fellow roommate Krista Stegall during a boozy (and dare we say, freaky) romantic encounter.
The voyeuristic series managed to win its time period--beating out both Friends and Spy TV--but it still only drew about a half-million more viewers than its premiere last week.
Sebik's unique style of foreplay actually wasn't shown during the episode. Instead, producers cut away as the toothy tough guy reached for the knife, and host Julie Chen then recounted the rest of the scene, reciting his now-infamous inquiry, "I'm gonna slash your throat. Would you get mad if I killed you?"
Immediately following the incident, producers came over the loudspeakers and called Justin into the Diary Room. After a three-hour session with the show's psychologist, Sebik was pulled from the house for good. His teary-eyed roommates packed up his stuff the next morning.
Justin later defended himself during an interview with Chen, insisting that the whole thing was a joke.
"If there's anyone who can perceive that as an act of violence or a threat, then you're an idiot," he told her. "I don't know what the hell you're watching and I don't know what kind of glasses you're looking through."
Sebik simply contends that his bullying demeanor and constant threats toward his roomies were part of a unique strategy to catch people off-guard.
"I didn't threaten nothing against anyone in the house," he told Chen. "My strategy was confusion, because when you confuse people, they don't know what's going on and they make bad decisions."
Meanwhile, executive producer Arnold Shapiro told the New York Post Thursday he opted not to show the knife-play "because I don't want to destroy his future." But he defended the eviction, saying, "To us, it's not funny at all."
With criticism building over the show's confrontational cast, producers are now apparently rethinking the amount of alcohol they're supplying to the guinea pigs. As it turns out, the houseguests have been stockpiling the beer and wine for occasional booze bashes, instead of just having a couple drinks with dinner.
While speaking to reporters Thursday in Pasadena, Shapiro hinted that he may cut down on the alcohol a bit. "Their next food competition is Saturday," he told Inside.com. "We'll have to decide how much they should have, or if they'll get any."
What's next, sharp objects and shoelaces?
Meanwhile, for the record, Sheryl, the sweet-as-a-peach Florida mom, was evicted from the house Thursday night, after roommates picked her instead of Nicole, the outspoken personal chef from Atlanta. Barring any other knife fights, the next episode is scheduled to air Saturday.
