Poundstone Barred from Kids
As friends of the 41-year-old funnywoman showed their support outside Santa Monica Superior Court, a teary-eyed Poundstone walked inside and pleaded innocent to three felony counts of lewd conduct with a girl under 14 years old, and another felony count of child endangerment involving two boys and two girls.
As requested by prosecutors, Santa Monica Superior Court Commissioner Roberta Kyman also granted two protective orders against the comedian: One ordering Poundstone to stay at least 500 yards away from two alleged children victims--including no written or phone contact--and another preventing her from seeing three other children without supervision.
In addition, Poundstone cannot be around any minors without their parent or guardian present.
Prosecutors wouldn't elaborate on exactly who is named in the orders. But Poundstone did have three adopted children and two foster children in her care--all of whom are currently in protective custody following her arrest.
The orders, in effect until August 13, were not anticipated by Poundstone's attorneys. "I was surprised," said Poundstone's lawyer, Steven Cron. But he assured reporters that the comedian "will be able to see her children."
"She loves children," he added. "For her to be told that she has got to stay away from her kids is very painful for her."
Prosecutors, meanwhile, said the protective orders are common for these types of cases. "They serve to protect the children from being alone in her presence," said Deputy District Attorney Gina Satriano. "It's common when any minor children are involved in a case."
Poundstone, a stand-up veteran and regular on syndicated shows like To Tell the Truth and Hollywood Squares, has been out on $200,000 bail since her arrest June 27 in Malibu.
Prosecutors say Poundstone allegedly committed the lewd acts on three separate occasions: May 19, June 5 and June 6. The child-endangerment incident also allegedly occurred June 6. If convicted, she could face up to 13 years in prison.
The comedian, wearing a lime-green pantsuit, pink shirt and plaid tie, said little during Tuesday's arraignment, answering "not guilty, your honor" to the charges and nodding to the judge's instructions as she wrapped her arm around her lawyer. She appeared nervous but in good spirits, as she fidgeted and joked with her attorneys while waiting inside the courtroom.
Earlier, Poundstone was greeted at the courthouse by a swarm of TV cameras, which followed her as she hugged some of the nearly two dozen supporters and friends who showed up carrying signs saying "We Love You Paula" and "We Support You."
"We love Paula," said Miriam Billington, a PTA president at the elementary school Poundstone's children attended. "I've seen Paula in action as a parent. She's a fantastic parent, a wonderful person and she deserves an award--not an arrest. It's shocking, and what gets us as parents is Paula being separated from her children, which is ridiculous and unnecessary."
Poundstone's arraignment had originally been scheduled for July 27, but her attorneys asked to have it moved up because they said prosecutors wouldn't release any details about the charges until she was arraigned. "Now that we have it, we will be able to review it and move forward," Cron said following Tuesday's court hearing.
But while Poundstone's attorneys finally got their hands on some details, prosecutors remained mum to reporters about specifics. A court order was issued sealing any information surrounding Poundstone's arrest. "I cannot discuss the facts of this case at this time," Satriano told reporters.
Poundstone, meanwhile, is due back in court July 30, when a date will be set for her preliminary hearing.
