J.Lo Joins Peacock Flock
But the hardest working woman in show-biz is going to be working even harder now that she's locked down a big TV deal with NBC.
The multihyphenate media queen, who got her start as a Fly Girl on Fox's In Living Color, has made a deal with NBC to produce and star in a musical special to air this fall, as well as produce three other specials and develop a half-hour sitcom based on her family and upbringing in the Bronx.
Maybe NBC should just rename itself JLE (as in J.Lo is Everywhere).
The deal was masterminded by Jeff Gaspin, an NBC executive in charge of alternative series and specials who got to know Lopez when he was at VH1.
"When I got to NBC, I knew that Jennifer had just had a number 1 selling album and top-grossing film in the same week, but that she'd never had a TV special," Gaspin tells Daily Variety.
Echoing what is sure to be the reason most viewers will tune in, he adds: "I can't wait to see what Jennifer will wear."
Gaspin says the first special will focus on Lopez's second album, the top-selling J.Lo, much like previous salutes done for the likes of Faith Hill, the Dixie Chicks and Madonna. The other three specials, produced through Lopez' Nuyorican Productions, will focus on artists other than Lopez.
As for the sitcom, it will be semi-autobiographical, focusing on Lopez's years growing up in a tight-knit Puerto Rican family.
"Jennifer tells hilarious stories about growing up all the time, and a show like this, a neighborhood comedy involving a family in a multicultural environment, with an engaging point of view and voice, is something NBC has put an emphasis on," coproducer Benny Medina tells Variety. "Jennifer will be very hands on as an executive producer, as this show is truly born out of her personal experiences."
Lopez has two sisters. Leslie is a homemaker and Linda is a VH1 veejay who also does local radio and TV work in New York.
Lopez, who recently launched her own clothing line, returns to the big screen Friday in Angel Eyes. She is also in talks to star in a supernatural romance called One and is planning a J.Lo tour next year. In between her multimedia projects she will star with Billy Campbell and Noah Wyle in the Michael Apted-directed Enough, the Tony Scott-directed Warner Bros. drama Taking Lives and the Columbia thriller Tick Tock.
NBC, meanwhile, announced its full fall schedule Monday.
