Vanilla Ice Chills in Jail
At least that's what police in Florida are saying after locking up the onetime rap superstar following a domestic squabble with his wife, Laura.
According to the police report, the rapper was arrested and jailed Wednesday after he cupped his hand over his wife's mouth to "shut her up" as they got into a violent spat while driving with their kids on Interstate 595 in Davie, Florida.
The 32-year-old Ice, whose real name is Robert Van Winkle, admitted he and his wife had a tussle, but said he only grabbed her hair to prevent her from hurling herself out of the truck's window.
While police say Laura Winkle told them she feared for her safety and that of her children, Ice told reporters, "It's not that big of a deal...My life's fine, everything's good, no hitting, no drugs," and his publicist says the couple is still together.
"It was a domestic violence dispute but she refused to file any complaint. They're back living in the same house," said Vanilla Ice rep Steve Green.
After selling 15 million copies of "Ice Ice Baby" and riding his crest of popularity to a starring role in his very own movie, Cool as Ice, the Iceman's career cometh apart as gangsta rappers ridiculed his funky white-boy persona and the media tore him apart for lying about his past.
After several attempts at a comeback, including the 1998 album Hard to Swallow (on which he tried reinventing himself as a modern rap-metal rocker along the lines of Korn) and the requisite Behind the Music installment, Ice once again found himself the butt of jokes (see him cryogenically frozen in Austin Powers) and relegated to the scrapheap of early '90s one-hit wonders.
Although Ice's publicist says his wife won't file a complaint, a Davie Police Department spokesperson says prosecutors will decide in the next three weeks whether to file domestic violence charges against the rapper.
