ODB on the Run (Again) After Fleeing Rehab
A bench warrant has been issued for the oft-handcuffed Wu-Tang Clan member after he reportedly fled from a Pasadena, California, drug-treatment facility last week. The 31-year-old rapper (also known as Russell Tyrone Jones) walked away from his current court-ordered residence, the Impact House, just prior to an October 17 court date at the Los Angeles Criminal Courthouse.
"He was told he had a court appearance, and he basically left Impact," says Los Angeles District Attorney spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons. "He was advised against leaving [by the staff], but he walked out."
Gibbons says Impact House is not a lock-down facility. So once ODB left, the facility notified the court, and it issued a warrant for his arrest. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Marshal Revel issued a "no-bail" warrant for ODB on October 17--meaning that if he's arrested, he won't be allowed to post bail for his release.
The rapper's lawyer, Robert Shapiro, would not comment on whether he has spoken to ODB, or if he knows the rapper's whereabouts. However, Shapiro told E! Online, "Russell is a person who has a serious dependency and was making great progress, and hopefully he'll return to the program and continue his progress."
It's yet another twist in the troubled life of ODB, who had been living at the Impact House since June, following a stint in county jail for violating his probation by possessing alcohol. His probation stems from convictions last year for making terrorist threats and wearing body armor.
The rapper initially appeared to be making healthy progress. In September, ODB moved into the second level of his treatment, and he was granted 12-hour, supervised passes to leave the facility and perform fellowship work.
But the Impact House contacted the court on October 2, saying the rapper was being placed back into the first phase of the program because he "was not cooperating with the program staff." His court date, originally scheduled for December, was then moved up to October 17. He never made it.
This isn't his first trip to Impact House, either. He stayed there from November 1999 through January of this year, when his rehab was terminated. In March, the rapper was shipped off to Chino State Prison for diagnostic evaluation. He was subsequently released into the custody of the Impact House.
But after this latest disappearance, the rapper might not be so fortunate. "He's probably looking at prison [time]," Deputy District Attorney Michael O'Gara tells SonicNet. "We're looking at whether he is suitable for probation, and based upon his actions thus far, in my opinion, he's not. We don't have many choices left."
He's also running out of places to flee. The rapper still faces separate charges in New York dating back to March 1998 for possessing crack cocaine and operating a vehicle illegally. A woman who accompanied ODB to his last hearing in Queens also has filed a harassment complaint against him.
