Busted Rhymes on Probation

After a one-year delay, Busta Rhymes is going to do his time.

A Manhattan judge on Friday sentenced the flipped-out rapper and Flipmode mentor to an already agreed-upon five years' probation, after he pleaded guilty to a gun-possession charge last year. Rhymes, 27, was arrested in December 1998 after police stopped his 1995 Mercedes Benz and found a loaded, unregistered .45-caliber pistol inside.

Rhymes' sentencing initially was scheduled to take place last September. But at the time, the rapper was under investigation for violating a protective order to stay away from his former girlfriend, also the mother of his 7-year-old son.

Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Herbert Adlerberg postponed any sentencing, instead ordering Rhymes to appear in court every two months until his family issues were resolved. Rhymes' girlfriend, Joanne Wood, had him arrested and accused him of not paying the child support of his son, T'ziah. But Rhymes denied the charges.

Rhymes, who first burst onto the hip-hop scene in the '90s as part of the Leaders of the New School, released his latest album, Anarchy, in June.

If convicted on the possession charges, Rhymes could have faced up to seven years in prison. Reps for Rhymes' label, Elektra, declined to comment on the sentencing.
