Meg and Dennis Uncouple

After more than nine years as one of Hollywood's more successful (and for that matter, normal) celebrity pairings, Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid have split up, a publicist for the couple confirms.

The split, which happened about six weeks ago, was "mutual and amicable," their publicist says. "They hope that the press will respect their privacy during this difficult time."

It's not like we're talking about Tommy and Pamela here. Ryan, 38, and Quaid, 46, have been one of Hollywood's most enduring and seemingly inseparable supercouples. They've been a twosome for 12 years (an eternity by show-biz standards), raising a son together while maintaining separate film careers.

The couple first met on the set of Joe Dante's 1987 comedy-adventure Innerspace, in which Quaid played a hell-raising Navy test pilot and she, his love interest. Both were involved with other people at the time (Ryan was with future ER doc Anthony Edwards, and Quaid with Lea Thompson of Caroline in the City fame).

Ryan once told Good Housekeeping magazine she was leery of the hard-partying Quaid when she first met him.

But the two were reunited in Austin, Texas, when they starred together in the 1988 thriller D.O.A.. Sparks then flew.

"I just love it that we can simply drive around in the car and still crack up about stuff," Ryan once said of their relationship. "I like the way he sees the world. Sometimes I just ask him what he's looking at. And it's fun, just that."

They got engaged in 1989 and were married on Valentine's Day in 1991. Ryan had put off the nuptials up to that point, insisting she wouldn't walk the aisle with Quaid until he kicked his cocaine habit. Quaid's been sober since 1991.

Their son, Jack, was born in April 1992. The couple, who also appeared onscreen together in 1993's Flesh and Bone, have split time between homes in Santa Monica and Montana.

There's been no word from their publicist about whether the two plan to divorce.

Ryan and Quaid's careers have had dramatically different trajectories during the course of their coupledom--hers into the stratosphere, his more earthbound. She, of course, has spent much of her screen time in romantic flicks like When Harry Met Sally and You've Got Mail, while his recent films include 1998's Parent Trap remake and this year's Frequency.

Quaid's currently taking on a supporting role for Steven Soderbergh's upcoming Traffic, which was recently shooting in San Diego. Ryan, meanwhile, is working with Russell Crowe on Proof of Life, which is filming in New York and Ecuador.
