Keanu Tops MTV Movie Awards
"Whoa."
Ah, the word rings as true today as it did when he first uttered the phrase in his techno-thriller The Matrix--which, incidentally, took home three awards Saturday, including Best Movie, at MTV's ninth annual anti-Oscars.
Reeves also snagged the prized golden tub of popcorn for Best Male Performance and Best Fight (with Laurence Fishburne), in a ceremony that stayed true to its offbeat and off-color roots. The show, hosted by Sex and the City's Sarah Jessica Parker and taped at Sony Pictures Studios in Los Angeles, offered up its traditional round of movie parodies and acceptance speeches most actors only wish they could say at the Oscars. (Except most MTV winners aren?t nominated for Oscars.)
Among the, um, highlights: Mark Wahlberg picked his own nominee for Best Villain ("let's give it to Charlton Heston for being head of the NRA"), Samuel L. Jackson offered up a speech that'll need very careful bleeping, and Sarah Michelle Gellar got wet and sloppy both with fellow Best Kiss winner Selma Blair, and with boyfriend Freddie Prinze Jr.
Oh yeah, and there were awards, too. Aside from her Best Kiss prize, Gellar also took home Best Female Performance honors for her role as the temptress in the Dangerous Liaisons teen update Cruel Intentions.
Mike Myers took home two awards for Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me: Best Villain for his role as the lovable Dr. Evil, and Best On-Screen Duo, with Verne "Mini-Me" Troyer. Best comedic performance honors went to Adam Sandler for Big Daddy.
Retribution also came for Matt Stone and Trey Parker, who were snubbed Oscar night for their South Park anthem "Blame Canada," but took home MTV?s prize for another tune from the film, "Uncle Fucka."
"When I wrote the song 'Uncle Fucka' I didn't realize it would touch so many lives," Parker said backstage.
Hmmm, it must have been the fart solo.
The MTV awards are chosen by the viewers themselves, who cast some eight million ballots for their favorite flicks. The show will air Thursday from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. on MTV.
