J.Lo's "Wedding" Kisses Off "Valentine"
Her romantic comedy The Wedding Planner remained number one at the box office for a second weekend, earning an estimated $11 million.
The national love affair with Lopez, whose album J.Lo is topping the album charts, beat back the challenge of Valentine. Starring a bunch of curvaceous beauties, including erstwhile Bond babe Denise Richards and David Boreanaz (aka TV's Angel), this low-budget R-rated slasher flick debuted in second place, with an estimated $10.1 million.
Also debuting in the top 10 was Head Over Heels, starring another bunch of beauties--including Freddie Prinze Jr. It tumbled lamely into seventh place, with an estimated $5 million.
The week's only other new release, the Kirk Cameron-led Christian-themed thriller Left Behind, finished outside the top 10, with an estimated $2.6 million. The indie film, which was actually released on video last year, opened in 874 sites and averaged $2,918 per screen.
Meantime, in third place, Tom Hanks' Cast Away earned another $7.41 million, which pushed the desert-island adventure's gross to $202 million after seven weeks. It's the third film from 2000 to pass the $200 million mark, following Mission: Impossible 2 and Dr. Seuss's How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
Also continuing to score big box office is Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Pouncing into an additional 294 theaters to bring its total exposure to 1,163 sites, the martial arts fantasy earned an estimated $7.3 million in fifth place, with the highest per screen average in the top 10: $6,323. In nine weeks of limited release, it has now grossed about $53.5 million.
Another film that has held steady is Traffic, which earned $6.2 million for sixth place, a drop off of just 3 percent from last weekend. Sean Connery's Finding Forrester is also hanging in there. It only dropped 5 percent, remaining in eighth place with $4.4 million.
