Gary Coleman Surrenders to Police

Gary Coleman's no longer on the lam.

An official fugitive for all of two hours--police issued a warrant for his arrest when he failed to show for a lunchtime interrogation--the erstwile Arnold Jackson surrendered to police in Hawthorne, California, Friday afternoon.

There he was fingerprinted, photographed and booked for investigation of assault and battery for allegedly clocking a female fan.

Lt. James McInerny said Coleman, 30, was released on his own recognizance and must show August 25 in Inglewood Muncipal Court.

Lawyer Adam London, who arrived and departed with his arm around the diminutive Diff'rent Strokes star, advised Coleman not to speak to police or the press.

"We're looking forward to resolving this matter very quickly," London told reporters before chauffeuring Coleman away in a silver Mercedes.

The 4-foot-8 Coleman, now a mall security guard, was shopping for a bulletproof vest when he was approached by autograph-seeking fan Tracy Fields. After signing his name, Fields asked for a longer message. That sent Coleman into a tizzy--he allegedly slugged Fields in the face then continued to pummel her when she flopped on the floor.

If convicted of the charges, Coleman could get up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine, and could lose his security-guard license.
