Farrah Fawcett, Ryan O'Neal Split
One of Hollywood's longest nonmarriages is over. Farrah Fawcett, 51, and Ryan O'Neal, 55, announced Saturday that they were splitting up after 15 years together.
According to their publicist, who spread the news of their breakup around Tinseltown in a short statement, "The two remain committed and will jointly participate in the upbringing of their (12-year-old) son, Redmond."
Rumors of their separation had been circulating for years. People magazine, quoting an unnamed source close to the couple, reported they split for a time in 1995. Their relationship is "not all hearts and flowers," the source said. "(The breakup) may not be official yet, but there is a serious problem."
In May 1994, Fawcett told TV Guide that the relationship had some troubles but that she would be devastated if it ended. "Sometimes Ryan breaks my heart," Fawcett said. "But he's also responsible for giving me confidence in myself."
Though their relationship lasted longer than many marriages, especially the Hollywood variety, the couple never tied the knot.
The ex-Charlie's Angel divorced Six Million Dollar Man Lee Majors in 1977. She once told a reporter that marriage is "purely a business contract" that "kills romance." While Fawcett made it a habit of rebuffing the persistent proposals of the twice-divorced O'Neal, she said he was the only man she knew who could accept her independence.
Before falling for Farrah in 1982, O'Neal had been married to actresses Joanna Moore and Leigh Taylor-Young.
Since her star-making stint on Charlie's Angels, Fawcett starred in the stage and screen versions of Extremities and the TV film The Burning Bed. Her next project is The Apostle. O'Neal also broke through on the small screen in Peyton Place before hitting it big in in Love Story and Paper Moon. He also is the father of actress Tatum O'Neal, his Oscar-winning co-star in Paper Moon and actor Griffin O'Neal. The elder O'Neal will appear in the upcoming An Alan Smithee Film.
