Oasis Gives Up Touring But "Continues to Exist"
Creation Records issued a statement Friday saying, "the band will not be touring in the foreseeable future, but in every other aspect, Oasis will continue to exist and function as a band."
Citing "internal differences" Thursday, the band, headed by Noel and Liam Gallagher, has already canceled the remaining dates on its U.S. tour, and it now seems that the 15 concerts scheduled through December in Europe and Australia are also in jeopardy. According to Creation, 28-year-old Noel and 23-year-old Liam are "spending time together and getting over jet lag." As reported yesterday, Noel Gallagher flew solo back to London without comment. Liam and the rest of the band arrived Friday morning. The normally loquacious Liam was also mum about the latest rumored tiff between the battling brothers.
Indeed, the Gallaghers belong to the rock 'n' roll tradition of brotherly hate. From the Everly Brothers to the Kinks' Davies brothers to the Black Crowes' Robinson brothers, sibling bashing has been a key ingredient to music-making. The Gallaghers apparently so despise each other that they rarely give interviews together--during their first major interview for a London music magazine, Noel smashed a chair over Liam's head.
"You wanna try being me and [Liam] for an afternoon," Noel told a reporter last month. "You'd slit your own throat, mate."
So is the band splitting up? Music industry observers say that the brothers will probably record together again, even if they don't go back on the road. If so, they would be mimicking their idols, the Beatles, who got sick of touring in 1966 and quit playing live concerts. Oasis has reportedly been bummed by mixed reviews and slow ticket sales for American gigs.
