Venezuela Stays Standing, Wins Miss Universe

It takes more than double-sided tape and speeches about world peace to be crowned Miss Universe. Like, say, the ability to smile and stand at the same time.

Better luck next year, Miss USA.

Just as last year's American representative before her, Texas-born Miss USA Crystle Stewart failed to remain aloft during her grueling evening wear sashay across the stage in Nha Trang, Vietnam, Sunday—paving the way for 22-year-old Miss Venezuela, Dayana Mendoza, to snatch the crown.

After Jerry Springer and Spice Girl Melanie Brown announced Mendoza as the 57th wearer of the sash, the contestant, who just 18 months ago was the victim of a kidnapping in her home country, said she planned on spending the next year speaking out on humanitarian issues.

And, if time permits, showing U.S. entrants how not to fall during a worldwide broadcast.
