The alabaster Oscar winner has signed on to star in The Eighth Wonder, a globetrotting action thriller that, according to the Hollywood Reporter, is aiming to be an estrogenized Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Plot details are under tighter wraps than a mummy, but the flick will revolve around a worldwide treasure hunt concocted by Mr. and Mrs. Smith scribe Simon Kinberg. Kidman was originally on board to star in the latter film before scheduling conflicts caused her to back out.
No doubt to her and Jennifer Aniston's chagrin.
Meanwhile, Miley Cyrus' series of post-Vanity Fair mea culpas has apparently done enough to keep her in Disney's good graces—the tween queen has signed on to star in a non-Hannah Montana flick for the Mouse House...
According to Variety, the big-screen venture is being custom written to the pop culture phenom by weep-inducing author extraordinaire Nicholas Sparks, who previously penned Kleenex-friendly faves The Notebook and A Walk to Remember. Miley's mama, Trish Cyrus, will executive produce the flick.
While there's no word on the storyline, one detail that has been revealed is that the film will not be a musical. (Call it a hunch, but we're sure producers will find a way to have Cyrus represented on the soundtrack.)
Sparks' as-yet-untitled book will be published in fall 2009.
In other big casting news:
- Michael Douglas is revving up to play a former car dealership owner whose professional and personal lives were destroyed due to his straying ways in Solitary Man. According to Variety, Susan Sarandon, Danny DeVito and Jenna Fischer are all in talks to star in the film, which goes into production in New York this November.
- From unlikely ladies' man to above-the-title Divorced Guy. David Spade is set to star in Divorced Guys about, what else, recently separated men folk who join forces for a soul-searching, comedy-laced, guys-only road trip, per Variety. While Spade conceived the storyline, House Bunny's Fred Wolf will write and direct the piece.
- Comedian Zach Galifianakis is doubling his pleasure with a pair of new projects. First up, according to the Hollywood Reporter, Galifianakis will take the lead role in Warner Bros.' The Hangover as a wild groom who is lost by his bachelor party buddies in Las Vegas just hours before his wedding. Filming begins this weekend. He's also set to star in Bored to Death, the HBO pilot starring Jason Schwartzman. In that, he'll play a comic book artist and BFF to Schwartzman, an alcoholic writer who pretends to be a private detective.
- Towelhead's Chase Ellison is paying a visit to Tooth Fairy, joining Dwayne Johnson, Ashley Judd and Julie Andrews as a gifted teen who bonds with his mother's hockey player boyfriend, who boasts the titular nickname. Per the Hollywood Reporter, when their relationship struggles, the BF agrees to act like a real tooth fairy, tutu and all. Cameras roll this week.
