There's no doubt about it—Teen Mom's Amber Portwood has been down a rocky road this past year. But though she currently remains in the hospital under evaluation following suicide threats made this week, things appear to be looking up.

"She's not able to talk to anyone, but she's doing better," a source close to the reality star exclusively tells E! News.

So what led to the 21-year-old's breakdown?

Prior to baby daddy Gary Shirley phoning authorities after fearing Amber may injure herself, the source said that Portwood had been "very depressed" and very much in constant fear of losing custody of daughter Leah. The source also said that Amber has long been on medication to control mood swings and manage her anger.

However, while she's been doing her best, she obviously doesn't live in a bubble, and it seems like outside criticism got the better of the Teen Mom star, who often phoned up friends crying, asking why she had directed so much ire from seeming strangers.

"She went to Walmart last week and she walked by someone in the parking lot and they started calling her names. This is what she deals with," the source said.

Meanwhile, Amber's brother, Shawn Portwood, took to his Facebook page this week and asked his followers to keep his sister in their thoughts—and to ask everyone else to think about the consequences before unleashing blind venom onto his already troubled sibling.

"All I can say at this time is Amber is fine, but please everyone pray for her," she wrote. "She needs your support now more than ever. The negative people and comments she encounters day-to-day have finally got the best of her. Please let's get more people to join to show their support for her."

Get better, Amber. If not for your own sake, then for your daughter's.
