Does "Cage rage" run in the family?

Nicolas Cage's 20-year-old son, Weston Cage, was taken to a Los Angeles-area hospital for a psychiatric evaluation after flying off the handle and getting into a violent spat in Hollywood yesterday.

Here's what we know:

An LAPD spokeswoman tells E! News that officers responded to a call about a fight that had broken out at the intersection of Selma and Ivar Avenues, near the Farmer's Kitchen where Weston had reportedly been dining, though she could not confirm the identities of those involved.

"We had numerous phone calls to respond to that incident. We responded and the person was taken to the hospital for minor injuries," said the spokeswoman, adding that no arrests were made nor is there any criminal investigation.

TMZ quoted sources as saying that Weston went ballistic while lunching with his trainer after the latter told him he couldn't eat something on the menu. He then became aggressive and purportedly shoved the trainer. The trainer and another unidentified individual tried to calm the younger Cage down, but Weston tried to kick him.

Cops were called in and they threatened to tase Weston if he didn't get on the ground. Weston cooperated and was handcuffed, but he supposedly became violent again, prompting them to strap him to a gurney. He was then transported by ambulance to Los Angeles' Cedar-Sinai Medical Center for a mental evaluation, though it's unclear as of press time if he was put on a 5150 psychiatric hold.

A rep for Cage was unavailable for comment. But insiders close to the Cage family told the website that the Drive Angry star had visited his son at the hospital and plans to remain in town to help him through whatever ails him.

Aside from being the lead singer of the metal band Eyes of Nocturn, Weston's a noted comic-book geek like Nic. In fact, when he tied the knot in April, he gave his musician-wife, Nikki Williams, a ring sporting the hammer-wielding thunder god Thor, his favorite Marvel superhero.

Watching dad losing his s—t on the big screen all these years probably hasn't done him any favors.
