"The bottom line is, the police department should treat everybody exactly the same. If you don't get a police escort, P. Diddy shouldn't," New York City Michael Bloomberg said Tuesday upon hearing that the NYPD provided an escort for Sean "Diddy" Combs last week following his show at the Hammerstein Ballroom.
The to-do over Diddy's special treatment comes on the heels of an investigation as to why Washington, D.C., cops just did the same for Charlie Sheen.
The NYPD says a sergeant, who did not have authorization to do so, dispatched the escort for Diddy. According to the New York Post, the rapper had been planning to charter a helicopter to fly him from Manhattan to West Orange, N.J., but couldn't clear it with the FAA in time and ended up just driving.
One cop car then eased his passage to the Lincoln Tunnel about a block away, according to authorities.
"I would assume there was no reason for [the escort], but I just don't know," Bloomberg said, noting that police escorts are only used in the event of "a security issue."
A rep for Combs hasn't commented, but the mayor said that he has spoken to Police Commissioner Ray Kelly about the incident and the NYPD is investigating.
