Indy Digging DVD and Blu-ray

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull 2008 Lucasfilm Ltd.

Dr. Jones' latest quest is getting the Blu-ray treatment.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull will be coming to DVD and Blu-ray high-definition disc Oct. 14, distributor Paramount Home Entertainment and Lucasfilm announced Tuesday.

The fourth installment in director Steven Spielberg and producer George Lucas' eternally popular archaeologist-adventurer and the first in the franchise since 1989's Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade will be released as a single-disc DVD containing just the movie.

It will also be available as a special two-disc set rife with extras, among them a featurette on the (painfully) slow development process which culminated in the filmmakers choosing a Crystal Skull as the latest object of Indy's fascination; a production diary showcasing behind-the-scenes snippets of filming in New Mexico, Connecticut and Hawaii; and the usual shorts detailing makeup, costumes and all the elaborate visual effects that went into Indy's 1950s encounter with E.T.

Last but not least, Paramount plans to unearth a new DVD boxed set sporting—you guessed it—all four Indiana Jones movies, from Raiders of the Lost Ark and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom to Last Crusade and Crystal Skull.

Alas, cinephiles will have to wait a while before the first three entries will be transferred to Blu-ray. No word yet on a release date.

After a 19-year hiatus, Lucas and company revived America's favorite whip-wielding professor when Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull swung into theaters May 22. The film has so far grossed $314 million in U.S. ticket sales and has a cumulative global tally of $776 million.
