Following the Senate's vote to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" Saturday, celebrities like Lady Gaga and Ellen DeGeneres hit the Twitterverse to celebrate.

"Can't hold back the tears + pride," Gaga tweeted. "We did it!! Our voice was heard + today the Senate REPEALED DADT.  A triumph for equality after 17 YEARS. Today I am so proud to be American. I wish I was home so I could throw a Parade. We are on the way...to full equal".

"Thank you Senators for pushing us one step closer towards full equality," Degeneres wrote on her Twitter page.

The policy, which required gay men and women to hide their sexual identity or risk being kicked out of the military, was passed during the Clinton administration era in 1993.

Following the repeal, President Obama said in a statement, "It is time to close this chapter in our history. It is time to recognize that sacrifice, valor and integrity are no more defined by sexual orientation than they are by race or gender, religion or creed," according to the Washington Post

The President also hit Twitter saying, "By ending "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," no longer will patriotic Americans be asked to live a lie in order to serve the country they love."

But, President Obama, the Alejandro crooner and DeGeneres weren't the only Twitter-loving celebrities excited about the news of the policy's repeal….

"FINALLY!  Equality IS coming." Kathy Griffin wrote

"SUPPORTING ALL OUR TROOPS! RT @Pink: Congrats 2 US!!! REPEAL of DADT & 17 years of allowing Human Rights Violations. There's hope after all," Katy Perry wrote.

Neil Patrick Harris added, "Don't Ask, Don't Tell REPEALED! So proud of Congress for making the right decision. Now all soldiers can serve with integrity. A great day."

"In the direction of practicing kindness, #DADT was finally repealed! Yay! One step closer to equality and recognition!! #AboutF@$&ingTime," One Tree Hill's Sophia Bush said

Ricky Martin wrote, "One step closer to #equality!! #DADT is gone!Historical! #lgbt".

Modern Family's Jesse Tyler Ferguson wrote "Stepping closer to Equality! Good Job America!!!! Don't Ask Don't Tell closer to being on the "Remember-how-crazy-it-was-when..." list!"
