Butch Patrick, the actor best known for playing Herman Munster's werewolf son, Eddie Munster, on '60s cult TV series The Munsters, checked out of a New Jersey rehab facility two weeks ago and nearly died days later from an overdose, his publicist confirms to E! News.
Here's what went down.
Thinking he could conquer a 40-year-old cocaine and alcohol addiction on his own, the 57-year-old Patrick "not only continued with drugs and alcohol but started to black out and make rash decisions while under the influence causing him to nearly overdose last Thursday evening," says rep Jodi Ritzen.
A friend and the head writer of his TV show Life's a Butch subsequently contacted the Oasis treatment center in Orange County, Calif., where the A&E series Intervention occasionally films. Administrators agreed to admit the former child star even though he's uninsured, giving him a $25,000-a-week scholarship for free treatment.
Upon Butch's arrival in Los Angeles, friends and family staged an intervention and persuaded him to check into the rehab clinic, where he will now stay for "a minimum of 30 days with seven days in detox," says Ritzen, who has since canceled a number of personal appearances by the actor while he cleans up.
"With the amount of alcohol and drugs that Patrick was consuming, especially having only one kidney, he is lucky to be alive," says Ritzen. "I would rather have Butch meet with fans clean and sober then take the chance of him winding up dead."
News of Patrick's latest downward spiral comes on the heels of his split with his ex-NFL cheerleader fiancée Donna McCall, the self-described biggest Munsters fan.
