After Demi Lovato announced she was seeking treatment for unspecified "physical and emotional issues" we kept waiting for her Disney cohorts to chime in.

Then we got a lengthy, rambling, self-blaming statement purportedly from Selena Gomez, Lovato's long-estranged BFF, making its rounds on the Internet. But is it real?

Brace yourselves. This rumor is…

So false!

Gomez is one smart cookie who presumably enjoys steady employment at the hands of Mickey & Co., and who would know better than to release a statement like this:

"Demi is my best friend and I don't care what has happened recently in the past," the quote wrongly attributed to Gomez read. "I feel like a horrible friend for not being there for her or acting like I haven't been there.

"I recently visited with her and I'm glad she is seeking help and I hope that it gets better for her. I knew this time was going to come, but I didn't think it would happen this way. I love Demi with my heart and wish her the best of luck and I definitely am standing by her side no matter what happens."

"No matter what happens"? "I knew this was going to come"? The defense could rest on that alone, not to mention that any publicist worth their salt would have put the brakes on that rambling statement's release faster than you could say, "I'm going to Disneyland!"

Not to mention, whoever released the "quote" didn't do too much research. Earlier this week, Gomez's publicist made clear that Selena would not be commenting on Demi's situation. At all.

Today, the rep E! News that the "statement" was definitely not from Gomez.

Hey, maybe she'll send some flowers instead.
