No doubt Jeffrey Jones would rather take the principal's office than the pokey.

The veteran character actor best known for playing maniacal headmaster Ed Rooney in Ferris Bueller's Day Off pleaded not guilty this morning in a Los Angeles court to one felony count of failing to update his California sex-offender registration.

The 63-year-old Jones was busted on June 23 for allegedly not complying with a state law requiring him to inform authorities of his whereabouts within five days of his last birthday, which is Sept. 28.

The next hearing is set for Aug. 18.

It's the second clerical snafu for the actor, who was also arrested in 2004 when he failed to update anybody he was moving from California to Florida. Both purported violations stem from a 2003 child-pornography case in which he pleaded no contest to hiring a 14-year-old boy for an X-rated photo shoot.
