Christopher Polk/Getty ImagesAs Team Edward gears up to claim victory over Team Jacob this month when The Twilight Saga: Eclipse finally hits theaters, Twihards let it be known that they're not done celebrating the splendor that was New Moon yet.
The vampirific sequel was named Best Movie at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards on Sunday and saw its reach extend into five categories overall, more proof that the young'uns who vote for such things don't give two hoots what critics say, they just want their Ed TV.
And it's ironic that there's now an award for Best WTF Moment, considering the entire telecast itself was, in fact, a chain of WTF moments. Some were excruciatingly bad (A for effort, host Aziz Ansari) but, happily, many ranged from quite funny to downright hilarious.
First of all, perhaps sensing cinematic blood in the water once again, Robert Pattinson and his smokin' short 'do had a very dominant night.
The British heartthrob took home a leading three gilded buckets of popcorn, including the first-ever bucket for Global Superstar, a fans' choice award for which he beat out both of his Twilight cosuperstars as well as Zac Efron and Johnny Depp.
Pattinson also won for Best Male Performance, after which he endearingly thanked his parents for conceiving him and Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke, "who I owe a lot now, like everything."
Kristen Stewart, winner for Best Female Performance for New Moon, gave one of her signature nonspeeches, first asking the stars of Grown Ups, who presented her with the award, if they "want to do this for me?"
"Thank you so much. I guess Twilight is really awesome, and I agree. Whoo!" she gave a thumbs-up. [Director] Chris Weitz, I haven't talked to him in awhile. How cool is this, right? I'm going to peace out and thank you so much."
Pattinson, sitting with his knees tucked under his chin, looked positively dazzled the entire time, however. And that must have stirred his inner mischief-maker because, when he and Stewart made their second trip in as many years to the podium to accept the popcorn for Best Kiss, he didn't let his costar get away with her usual "it takes a lot of smoke and mirrors to make us look good kissing," and planted one on her anyway when her guard was down.
Stewart somehow managed not to spontaneously combust.
In other highlights:
• Will Smith's son Jaden, aka The (Next) Karate Kid, opening a can of karate-flavored whoop-ass on blowhole studio exec Les Grossman, aka the very sporting Tom Cruise in the guise of his Tropic Thunder character.
• Les Grossman's grind 'n' dance routine with Jennifer Lopez. We've never liked Cruise or J.Lo as much as we do right now.
• Sandra Bullock remaining absolutely lovely and funny throughout as she accepted the Generation Award for her considerable achievements on the big screen. Spike TV's Guys' Choice Awards kinda stole the return-of-Sandy thunder from MTV, but the stoic star still get a lengthy standing-O and gave a great tutorial (hope you were paying attention, Lindsay Lohan) on staying classy in times of turmoil. Meanwhile, Scarlett Johansson looked great but doesn't hold a candle to Meryl Streep, makeout-wise.
• Every second Jonah Hill and Russell Brand were on camera, from their rabid makeout during the inspired Kiss Cam segment (Zac and Vanessa could learn something) to their Team Edward/Team Jacob debate to Brand repeatedly calling Sean "Diddy" Combs "Puffy." They were awesome. (And Brand gets points for standing and looking smitten throughout blue-haired fiancée Katy Perry's "California Gurls" performance.)
• The Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows trailer. Edward who?
• The Hangover's Ken Jeong's unexpectedly serious, tender moment when, in accepting for Best WTF Moment—in particular for his nudie-bits scene—he gratefully informed the audience that his beloved wife has been breast-cancer-free for two years.
• Mark Wahlberg recaling two bizarre moments from MTV shows past, first when he called out The Other Guys costar Will Ferrell out—"You said I was going to land on [Eva Mendes] like Sacha Baron Cohen landed on Eminem!"—while suspended from wires above the stage. Then, he threatened Best Villain winner Tom "Draco Malfoy" Felton, "I'd Taylor Swift your ass if I could get down there!" as he and Ferrell continued to heckle from above.
Thankfully, no one Taylor-Swifted anyone's ass, and the show wrapped up in a tidy two hours, with no apologies necessary from any of the participants in the foreseeable future.
