Hey, if Arnold Schwarzenegger can be governor, why can't William Shatner be governor general?

It's a question being asked by the star's homegrown Canadian fans, who have taken a cue from Betty White's minions and launched a Facebook campaign to get the Montreal native appointed to the five-year ceremonial position—meant to represent Queen Elizabeth II on this side of the pond—come September.

"It's time for Canada to boldly go where no country has gone before," proclaims the Facebook group, now more than 35,000-Trekkers strong, in support of the Shatman.

"Imagine Mr. Shatner reading the Speech from the Throne (opening Parliament) in that classic Captain Kirk style we have all come to know and love."

Here's hoping Parliament has no bans on bongos.

The position is currently being held by Governor General Michaelle Jean, whose term expires, and will not be extended, this fall. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has been tasked with finding her replacement.

Last week, Shatner acknowledged the campaign, then in its infancy.

"I'm being drafted by various groups to run for Governor General," he tweeted. "Would they accept me if I campaign for salmons' rights?"

A few days later, the idea seemed to be growing on him.

"I believe Governor General means you govern the generals," he tweeted. "Does that make me part of the army?"

In the wake of his noncommittal online musings, an old friend did his part to urge Shatner on.

"Bill: You're being considered for Governor General of Canada. Do it!!" his erstwhile No. 2, Leonard Nimoy, tweeted. "Finally a chance to do something w/your life."

And maybe set an unlikely stage for a Kirk-Spock reunion.

"Bill: Outgoing Mayor of Calgary said I should run for the office," he wrote yesterday. Me as Mayor and Shatner as Governor General!!"

Stranger things have happened. But that's Canada, eh?

Shatner may be facing recruitment for a new gig, but did you hear? Spock's headed for the retirement home!
