If the circumstances are vile, you must go to trial.

A judge has set an Aug. 4 start date for Howard K. Stern and two doctors accused of aiding and abetting Anna Nicole Smith's prescription-drug habit, which ultimately resulted in her death from an accidental overdose in 2007.

After a three-week preliminary hearing in October, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge David Wesley determined that there was enough evidence to merit a trial for Stern, psychiatrist Khristine Eroshevich and Dr. Sandeep Kapoor.

The trio have pleaded not guilty to 23 felony counts altogether, including obtaining an opiate prescription by fraud, deceit or misrepresentation;  prescribing, administering or dispensing a controlled substance to an addict; and unlawfully prescribing a controlled substance.

Another hearing is scheduled for April 23.
