Why, Jack Bauer. How you've changed.

Providing a brief respite from the otherwise must-see Jay Leno-Conan O'Brien insultathon that late-night has devolved into this week, Kiefer Sutherland appeared on the Late Show With David Letterman last night to promote the new season of 24 and show off those sassy gams of his.

Dressed to the nines four-and-a-halfs in a granny-chic dress and combat boots, Sutherland surprised the audience as much as Letterman with his unexpected attire.

"You're doing the remake of Beverly Hillbillies? You're granny? You're…what's happening here?" a confused but clearly amused Letterman asked.

"Far worse than that," Sutherland explained. "I lost a bet. Over the weekend, I was so sure New England was gonna win that I told a guy who used to be my friend that if New England lost, I would wear a dress on Letterman."

Hilarity—along with talk of leg-waxing, the proposition of a counterbet and a soon-aborted attempt to seriously discuss the new season of 24—ensued. And he did manage a brief mention of that situation.

"Me and Jay Leno in the closet?" the actor asked when queried on whether his dress was a grander statement on his life. "No."
