Someone's gotta have Tiger Woods' back. Why not Mel Gibson?

The Braveheart actor and devout Catholic admits he's no hero when it comes to fidelity, but thinks the golfer's recent crucifixion is a bit much…or even part of a conspiracy.

"I feel sorry for Tiger Woods," he tells Britain's Daily Mail. "Why are we talking about this when we're sending 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan? You've got this history-changing event going on and we're talking about Tiger's private life and golf injuries. He's being used as a diversion and it just drives me crazy."

Perhaps his sympathy for the philandering club-swinger comes from his own experience. Gibson divorced his wife of 29 years, Robyn, in April, just six months before girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva gave birth to his eighth child, Lucia.

"When all's said and done, I did a pretty good hatchet job on my marriage," he says. "I'm to blame, if you're inclined to judge."

Making mistakes is part of being human, he says, but you have to man up and deal with the consequences.

"Nobody is without sin," he says. "You have to try to make amends if you can. You have to shut up and move on and not whine about it. And you have to deal with it like a man and that's it. Whatever fallout comes from it, be it fair or unfair, you've just got to accept your own culpability. The minute you start whining, it's ridiculous."

Let's just hope Tiger doesn't start whining, and that if he does, it doesn't result in anti-Semitic slurs at police officers.

Think Tiger should be taking tips from Mel? Sound off.
