The Toxic Twins have made up.
Just a day after guitarist Joe Perry announced via Twitter that Aerosmith would soldier on with a new lead singer amid speculation Steven Tyler had quit the band to focus on a solo career, the duo made a surprise appearance onstage at the Fillmore in New York and announced that all was well and he was back in the saddle.
"I just want New York to know I'm not leaving Aerosmith and Joe Perry, you are a man of many colors, but I, motherf--ker, am a rainbow!," Tyler told the crowd at the conclusion of the set by the guitarist's side band, the Joe Perry Project. They then launched into the Aerosmith classic "Walk This Way."
Well, that was fast.
Band obituaries began popping up after Tyler, 61, took a header off a stage in August, injuring his neck and head and breaking his shoulder. The accident forced the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers to cancel the remainder of their 2009 tour.
Tyler got out of bed long enough to join the band for two shows in Hawaii late last month and a concert at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Nov. 1.
The breakup speculation kicked into overdrive last week, when Tyler gave an interview to Britain's Classic Rock magazine saying that he wanted to concentrate on his own projects.
That led Perry to twitter that the band was "positively looking for a new singer to work with," while guitarist Brad Whitford tweeted that he had tried repeatedly to get in touch with Tyler to no avail. "You just can't take 40 years of experience and throw it in the bin!" Perry wrote.
With tempers now in check, maybe the quintet can finally record their planned follow-up to 2002's platinum-selling Just Push Play.
Just walk this way to the studios, boys, and leave your egos at the door.
