Kate Gosselin apparently figured she could handle one evening in Jon's company.

Instead of demanding that her estranged hubby leave their home immediately following their twin daughters' ninth birthday party this evening, she relented and let him stay until the kids' bedtime, according to the man himself.

"We're trying to be cordial for Mady and Cara," he said during a break in the festivities.

Joking that the party "could be World War III," Jon had complained yesterday that Kate was trying to manipulate their custody agreement to shorten his time with the girls, but he seemed in better spirits today after picking the twins up from the school bus stop and joining them for dinner.

The father of eight who used to be the titular star of a reality show on TLC showed up at the Pennsylvania house where he and Kate swap parenting time with a vanilla cake from Cupcake Cafe in NYC—where, unfortunately, a misinformed decorator spelled Mady's name in icing with two d's.

A probably pretty common error that nobody would have known about if the Gosselins hadn't started getting all controversial 'n' stuff.

Once upon a time, yet not that long ago, Jon and Kate celebrated their sextuplets' 5th birthday with a big party in front of TLC's cameras.

Jon now finds those very same cameras to be detrimental to his children's well-being and the network reluctantly suspended production last week at his request.

After which, according to his legal camp, the tabloid cover boy did not drain $230,000 from his and Kate's bank account.

A hearing to discuss Kate's allegation that Jon has left her with about $1,000 (not including the money in their kids' account) was postponed yesterday following the death of the presiding judge's wife.
