Chris Rock and Jay Leno Are Not on Team Polanski

Kirstie Alley just got some high-profile company.

Chris Rock and Jay Leno proved last night that not even Roman Polanski's recent extradition-fighting arrest is too taboo to joke about.

"This Polanski thing got me, man," Rock said. "What the hell? People are defending Roman Polanski 'cause he made some good movies?"

"Yeah, I don't get it," Leno added, before Rock continued on.

"Are you kidding me? He made good movies 30 years ago, Jay. Come on! Even Johnnie Cochran don't have the nerve to go, 'Well, did you see O.J. play against New England?' "

His incredulity didn't stop there.

"What the? Come on, man, she's 13. Thirteen! I've seen some hot 16-year-olds that look 18, 17[-year-olds] that look 18...Thirteen is 13. Nobody gets away with having sex with a 13-year-old."

He even went so far as to summon the word on everyone's mind—everyone, that is, but the California legal system.

While Polanski originally faced charges of rape and sodomy, he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of unlawful sex with a minor. He fled the country before sentencing.

"I mean, come on...rape. It's rape," Rock said. "Rape's number two. Okay, it's murder, then rape. It's number two. In the United States, we want to capture Osama Bin Laden and murder him. We're not gonna rape him. That would be barbaric!"

Plenty of Hollywood stars initially sided with Polanski, seemingly forgiving him for plying a 13-year-old with champagne and Quaaludes and then having unlawful sex with her simply because he knows his way around a video camera. But Rock and Leno are the latest in the increasingly vocal opposition, joining the likes of Alley, Jewel and Sherri Shepherd.

Even some of Team Polanski's most ardent backers seem to be stepping back from their initial rush to his defense. This week, Poland's prime minister and French officials both urged supporters not to lose sight of the gravity of the charges he faces—namely, having sex with a child—in their arguments to free the 76-year-old filmmaker.
