"Gentleman" Kiefer Returns to L.A., Is Lauded by Costars

After his headline- (and misdemeanor-) grabbing week in New York, Kiefer Sutherland is back in Los Angeles to celebrate the season finale of 24. And lest Jack Bauer be in the market for any character references, he need look no further than last night's red carpet.

While Sutherland and castmates refused to directly address the actor's arrest and alleged head-butting of Proenza Schouler designer Jack McCollough, the 24 supporting players did their best to lend their pal support.

"His focus is phenomenal, his commitment is phenomenal," acting president Cherry Jones told E! News. "In a social setting, he's the only man I've ever known who's ever escorted me to the ladies' room, waited for me and taken me back to my table.

"That is a gentleman."

Jon Voight, Mary Lynn Rajskub and Elisha Cuthbert—all but the humble Sutherland—seemed to be in agreement on the mannerly matter.

Voight called his costar "warm and friendly all the way."

"He's very professional, he's very clever. One of the high points was working with him."

Another of this season's new additions, Sprague Grayden, echoed the sentiments.

"He's everybody's anchor," she said. "He sets a precedent for a work ethic, and we all want to live up to his expectations. He's like a big brother."

Cuthbert, meanwhile, called her TV dad a mentor and someone who has not only been "very influential" in her own career but who "has been very much an inspiration" for her.

Rajskub put it the most simply.

"He brings that Jack Bauer intensity to everything he does. Kiefer's the best."

Sutherland deflected his costars' praise that he was the rock of the set, instead saying everyone involved in the show came together to create a "perfect storm."

"We've got a lot of anchors, but one of the things that's been so key to the show...we have one of the most amazing crews and unbelievable talented and gifted actors that are excited to come to work."

And as for his unshakeable veneer, Sutherland said he's not nearly as tough as he may seem and claims another of his castmembers is much more intimidating.

"Cherry Jones was the first actor on 24 I was actually really scared of working with, because she's one of the most talented, gifted theater actors and film actors," he said. "I was praying...she wasn't going to hate working with me."

The 42-year-old star was also quick to deny that he carries his character's intensity around with him.

"No," he said. "By the time I get to the craft service table, I'm back to me."

The seventh-season finale of 24 airs on Fox Monday night, and E! News confirms that, despite rumors of delays, filming on the eighth season of the series will kick off as planned in just two weeks.

Sutherland is scheduled to be arraigned on his third-degree assault charge June 22.
