Come next month, the French Riviera is going to be teeming with Basterds—which is not a commentary on Hollywood types or the locals.
As previously announced, Quentin Tarantino's Brad Pitt-starring World War II epic, Inglourious Basterds, will be shown in competition at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival, leading a list of 20 titles vying for the fest's top prize, the Palme d'Or.
In addition to being the only writer who failed to use spellcheck on his entry, Tarantino also has the distinction of being the only American director screening a film in the competition.
Among the other more high-profile directors attempting to snag the crown leaf this year are Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar, who will present the thriller Broken Embraces, starring longtime muse and recent Oscar winner Penélope Cruz; New Zealand's Jane Campion, who will show Bright Star, following the life of Romantic poet John Keats; and Ang Lee, who brings Taking Woodstock, a comedy about the 1969 rock fest starring Liev Schreiber and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
Meanwhile, Terry Gilliam's star-studded The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, the film Heath Ledger was working on at the time of his death, will also be screening at the fest, though out of competition, as will the new Disney-Pixar flick, Up.
Isabelle Huppert heads up this year's jury at the Cannes Film Festival, which runs May 13-24.
