Mandy Moore Knows—She Used to Kinda Suck
Matthias Vriens for Details Magazine
Mandy Moore has a new album coming out. It's called Amanda Leigh, her proper name, because this album is so seriously for-real she couldn't go by Mandy. She also posed in some lingerie for May's Details in order to emphasize the realness.
And that marriage last month to Ryan Adams also equals real points and "will improve Moore's standing with the Pabst Blue Ribbon crowd," according to the magazine.
It's hard to fault Mandy on her quest to be taken seriously. It's quite challenging to switch gears and start making "Todd Rundgren, Joni Mitchell, and Paul McCartney" music after starting out as a mediocre pop star created during the rise of Britney and Christina. And Mandy gets this, which is where jabs at her early career come in handy.
"The music is all a reflection of me now, not somebody else's choices," she tells Details, explaining her past. "I was just told to show up and what to sing...That was late-'90s pop music for you."
Of course, that doesn't mean all late-'90s pop music was bad—just her own. "I found myself in the company of Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, who had really quality music, much more so than mine. I'm sure there are people scratching their heads, going 'Wow, how is she still around?' "
It is pretty hard to believe anyone could still be around with a music video like "Candy" in their past.
And "In My Pocket" doesn't really help her situation, either.
But we still care about her. And maybe once Ryan, who she calls her "in-home teacher," finishes up real instruments lessons with her (she says she's learning to actually play the guitar and piano from him), she'll finally have enough serious musician points to make this thing happen.
