Billy Bob Thornton: Phoenix Rising or Plain Old Jerk?

Boxmasters frontman gives Canadian radio host a tough time when the poor guy dares to call him an actor

What a sport!

From his initial "I don't know what you're talking about" when Q host Jian Ghomeshi asked when he formed his band, the Boxmasters, to his comparing Canadian audiences to "mashed potatoes with no gravy," quirkmeister Billy Bob Thornton was about as unhelpful as it gets when it came to filling airtime during an interview Wednesday for Canada's CBC Radio.

Unwittingly proving great for filling blog space.

Thornton largely sat through the nearly 12-minute, music-centric interview looking and sounding as if he had just woken up from a long nap and was stunned to find himself sitting in a studio wearing a headset.

But when Ghomeshi expressed confusion as to why Thornton was rambling on about building model figures when he was a kid and then dared to mention that his guest was also an accomplished actor and screenwriter...watch out. Angelina's ex-hubby finally sounded alive then.

"That's part of your trajectory, isn't it?" Ghomeshi asked. "Not really," a bemused Thornton replied.

When asked if he was being such a contrarian because the host was trying to steer the conversation back to music from model trains, the self-proclaimed "music historian" shot back: "Since you're instructing not to talk about s--t like that, yeah, I am."

To top it all off, the Boxmasters frontman ultimately informed Ghomeshi that his bandmates would be playing an instrumental tune, and that he would only be participating on the drums.

Of which there were none.

"We don't cart those around at 6 o'clock in the morning," Thornton said.

Hmmm. Minus the fact that Thornton's face isn't obscured by a big ol' beard, he reminds us of someone...
