Michael Moore's No Paris Hilton
Larry King might not know George from Ringo, but he knows Paris from Michael.
The decision to bump filmmaker Michael Moore from Larry King Live to make way for Paris Hilton proved a savvy ratings decision. Wednesday's chat with a God-fearing, post-jail Hilton averaged 3.2 million viewers to the 1.3 million who tuned in Moore's rescheduled interview on Friday, per the latest Nielsen Media Research stats.
The Hilton appearance was cable's most watched "news" hour of the week.
The Moore appearance—a promotional stop for the director's new documentary, Sicko—was no stiff, pulling in healthier-than-usual numbers for the CNN talk show. (Prior to last week, Larry King had been averaging about 1.1 million.)
Moore, in fact, was almost, but not quite as popular as the Beatles. Last Tuesday's Larry King, featuring Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and the widows of John Lennon and George Harrison, saw 1.5 million witness the host's mistaking of Starr for the late Harrison. ("George, where were you?" King asked Starr of the drummer's whereabouts the night of Lennon's death.)
Though the Hilton interview was King's biggest hit of the week, it arguably was his biggest miss. The host confessed to E! News' Ryan Seacrest last week that he'd hoped for longer answers and "more introspection" from the hotel heiress who helped popularize the adage, "That's so hot."
Elsewhere, in other ratings highlights for the prime-time week ended Sunday:
- America's Got Talent (first place, 11.5 million), and not much else. The NBC variety show was the only network series to top 10 million viewers.
- Fox's So You Think You Can Dance is still hot after all these summers, landing all three of its installments in the Top 10.
- NBC's star-studded Princess Diana Tribute Concert (eighth place, 8.8 million) was outdone in the standings by the commoners of Fox's Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (fifth place, 9.3 million).
- Unlike most of the broadcast networks, Spanish-language Univision is enjoying the summer, placing just one fewer show in the Top 30 than ABC. The telenovela Fea Mas Bella (15th place, 7.4 million—for Monday's episode) and the talk-show Cristina (30th place, 6 million—for Monday's episode) did the trick.
- The numbers don't look great for NBC's dating game, Age of Love (36th place, 5.6 million).
- The chemistry doesn't look to be there for NBC's other dating game, Science of Love (48th place, 5.2 million).
- The basketball fans don't seem to be there for Shaquille O'Neal's ABC weight-loss show, Shaq's Big Challenge (62nd place, 4.5 million).
- NBC's Studio 60 (67th place, 4.2 million), we hardly knew ye.
- ABC's just-renewed According to Jim (84th place, 3.6 million for its first episode; 80th place, 3.7 million for its second episode—both reruns), we've known ye for a long time.
- In cable, TNT's The Closer (6.45 million viewers) edged out the BET Awards (6.4 million) for overall bragging rights.
- USA's Monday Night RAW got its typical monster numbers for an atypical three-hour retrospective (averaging 5.3 million) on WWE wrestler Chris Benoit, who killed himself and his wife and son.
- The VHI spinoff, Flavor of Love Girls: Charm School (4.1 million), is looking like a hit in its own right.
- Lindsay Lohan can still draw a crowd for her work, provided it's a Disney Channel rebroadcast of her old work, namely, the 2004 film Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen (4 million).
- USA's new ex-spy series Burn Notice (3.99 million) got off to a solid star.
- Bravo's new Paula Abdul reality series, Hey, Paula, got off to a, well, small start, averaging 607,500 for its first two episodes. By comparison, the network's Top Chef: Miami cooked for 2 million, while Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List got catty with 701,000.
Overall, CBS was the most watched network of the barely watched bunch, averaging 6.8 million for its rerun-heavy lineup. NBC (5.7 million) trailed, followed by Fox (5.6 million) and ABC (4.5 million).
