Does Angelina Hate Sharing a Red Carpet With Paris?

I saw Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt on the same red carpet as Paris Hilton and what's-his-name at the Cannes festival. Do actors who make a living actually working get upset when media whores show up on their red carpet? I would.

We're talking about France, dear. Cannes, if you haven't heard, is a lawless and cruel wasteland when it comes to observations of an American star's rank. At that film fest, people who teeter on the edges of America's C-list are mobbed as frenetically as Will Smith or Johnny Depp—or Brangelina.
In short: Cannes ain't America. And the rules of common decency—and common sense—have been tossed out of la fenêtre.
"Here, people may think Paris Hilton is a crackhead, but in Europe and the rest of the world, she's a megastar," veteran publicist Eileen Colavita explains. "Paris is like the Beatles over there."
Yes. Really. Now let's talk about American red carpets. At least one erstwhile A-lister has been known to get very grabby about her time on the red carpet...
Cannes Takes a Bow as Austria Sweeps Top Honors

The curtain was drawn following the 2009 Cannes Film Festival's closing feature, Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky, but that's when the fun really started.
Following the final film, judges deliberated on this year's awards winners and to the surprise of many, the Austrians and veritable newcomers came out on top.
The coveted Palme d'Or—Cannes's top prize—went to Austria's Michael Haneke and his drama The White Ribbon, which centers on impending World War I guilt and tragedy.
Acting honors were given out in similar fashion, as Austrian Christoph Waltz, star of Quentin Tarantino's World War II flick Inglourious Basterds, and fellow Aussie Charlotte Gainsbourg of Lars von Trier's Antichrist, were voted top thesps.
Gainsbourg stars opposite veteran actor Willem Dafoe in Antichrist, whom she thanked in her speech, while Waltz showed gratitude to Tarantino saying, "Above all I owe this to [my character, Nazi Colonel] Hans Landa and his unique and inimitable creator, Quentin Tarantino."
Among the surprise shutouts at this year's Cannes Festival were past Palm d'Or winners Jane Campion and Ken Loach and Oscar winners Ang Lee and Pedro Almodóvar.

Heath Ledger Takes Final Bow at Cannes

Heath Ledger's final performance has screened for the first time at the Cannes Film Festival, and the filmmakers aren't shying away from calling out the importance of the project.
Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, screening out of competition at the fest, even ended with an onscreen dedication: "A film from Heath Ledger and friends."
Ledger, who died in January 2008, plays a snake-oil salesman type who is found hanging from a London bridge by two members of a traveling theater troupe. The group introduces Ledger to a magic portal that allows him to travel to different fantastical worlds that exist within people's imaginations.
"There was irony throughout this film and there was even more irony post Heath's death," Gilliam told reporters. "I hope he would be pleased with it. I think he would be."

Cannes Notebook: Brad Pitt Being a Total Basterd

As Cannes finally gets into full swing, the buzz today is all Quentin Tarantino's World War II movie Inglourious Basterds. He, Brad Pitt and the other stars made the rounds in high spirits, talked Nazis and mocked each other.
Pitt noted how Tarantino matched the nationalities of the actors to their characters—mostly: "He cast Germans for Germans, French for French," Pitt said, looking sidelong at costar Mike Myers, the exception: "Canadians for British."
Costar Eli Roth (best known for directing Hostel) talked about the film's finale, where his Jewish soldier kills high-ranking members of the Nazi high command, while mocking his own bad-boy rep: "Being Jewish, for me, it's like Kosher Porn," he said. "Something I've fantasized about since I was 12."

Hayden Panettiere Hangs on Yacht With New Hunk
Has Hayden Panettiere found herself a new man and put those rumors about her married costar to rest?
The pint-size actress has been spotted frolicking in the South of France with Welsh TV presenter Steve Jones on the Neuro yacht.
The 32-year-old was first linked to 19-year-old Hayden when they had dinner together in London last week. This isn't the first time she's been hanging with older men...She reportedly split with her 31-year-old Heroes costar Milo Ventimiglia in February.

Paris Hilton may be all the way across the sea in Cannes, but she's still got us talking over here about her ring-finger bling.
The heiress is in France with boyfriend Doug Reinhardt, soaking up the sun and hitting up all the hot parties.
No word on whether the ring is indeed an engagment ring from her beau yet, but she did tell us in April that Doug was gonna be her husband at some point.
Could that be happening sooner rather than later? Stay tuned!

Cannes Notebook: Bad Food, Bad Movies

The Cannes Film Festival is about to get into full swing, and there's already trouble on the Riviera!
First, Penélope Cruz failed to show up to a press event Monday promoting Nine, a musical with Nicole Kidman and Fergie. Harvey Weinstein explained that Cruz—slated to attend, and in Cannes for Broken Embraces—had so skip due to "some kind of food poisoning."
She wasn't the only one feeling sick—plenty of moviegoers were queasy after Sunday night's screening of what's sure to be the fest's most talked-about film, Lars von Trier's Antichrist. Ripe with graphic sexual violence, the movie scored a round of boos, and many people walked out.
As stars Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg, who play a couple grieving the death of their young son, were preparing to walk the red carpet Monday night, reviewers were calling Antichrist "one of the biggest debacles in Cannes Film Festival history" (Jeffery Wells) and a film that "goes beyond malevolence into the monstrous" (Roger Ebert).

At the 62nd annual Cannes Film Festival, there's time for screenings that celebrate new talents and time between screenings to honor the greats. Not to mention all the parties later!
Martin Scorsese's presentation of the Technicolor classic, The Red Shoes, may have delayed the 10:30 p.m. Friday screening of Lee Daniels' inner-city drama, Precious, but the late start didn't dim the enthusiasm of the packed house.
Director Daniels introduced the film, alongside stars Paula Patton, Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz and Gabbie Sidibe, who plays the title role, a 16-year-old girl struggling with abuse. Daniels, visibly exhausted, still charmed the crowd: "Je suis fatigué [I'm very tired]. I've had too much champagne, so I'm not able to give the speech I spent three weeks preparing…"
While Daniels described the film's long journey from page to screen, Carey couldn't help but chime in. As Daniels noted, "I say this movie was made with love, bubble gum, popsicle sticks, everyone on this stage and grace…" Carey, from the side, added, "And grease."
Cannes Notebook: Fest Opens on an Up Note

The first day of the 62nd annual Cannes Film Festival was animated—and not just with the hustle of last-minute touches and red carpets being tacked down before 12 days of glamour on the French Riviera.
The fest kicked off with the premiere of Pixar's Up, the first-ever animated film to open Cannes. The 3-D fantasy—featuring Ed Asner as a 78-year-old man with a flying house—may not be in competition for the Palme d'Or, the festival's highest honor, but that didn't keep the party down:

This year's Cannes Film Festival is gonna be the Pitts. Or at the very least, one Pitt.
Brad Pitt, Penélope Cruz and Johnny Depp are among the A-listers expected to grace the finest red carpet on the French Riviera in the coming days, as the 62nd annual edition of the fest begins today and runs through May 24.
Pixar's Up has the honor of being the first time an animated feature—3-D to boot—has ever launched the event and will serve as the opening-night screening.
